Last week’s water adventures included a few night dives and a dawn dive because conditions were THAT GOOD. Also made it out with SD Expeditions again on Friday on nice flat seas! We were treated to multiple whale sightings out on the water, including a few greys, where I FINALLY got my tail shot I’ve been trying to get for the past two months! And then a small group of fin whales, which is a species I had never seen before! We had a few beautiful blue sharks come in again, with specifically one gorgeous female who was very inquisitive. Highly recommend getting out on the water with these guys!
I was curious to know a little more about the fin whale since this was my first sighting of them. I read they are the second largest whale in the world following the blue whale. The can measure up to 80-90 feet in length and weigh in at as much at 80 tons! Despite its large size they are long and slender and can reach up to speeds of 25mph in short bursts. The only natural predator to these graceful creatures are the killer whales, however due to extensive hunting during the whaling era these marine mammals are currently listed as a protected species.
