Next up in San Diego, California, some more of the local celebrities!
This nudibranch or sea slug is called a Hermissenda opalescens. They are pretty common in San Diego and can really glow if the light hits them just right! They love snacks of hydroids, sea anemones, and sometimes each other! Hardcore.
This was taken in La Jolla in the canyon around 65 ft deep.
The sevengill shark is a personal favorite of mine! These prehistoric cow shark beauties are in our waters year round, but in the spring they come in shallow to presumably mate. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of them by just snorkeling during this time! They are named for the 7 gill slits they have, most sharks have five.
A playful sea lion buzzes playfully through the water! In La Jolla Cove, a sea lion colony lounges on the rocks and splashes through the water. They are a blast to observe on land or ocean! The younger pups can be playful while the adults will eyeball you from afar. These are still wild animals so make sure to be respectful and keep your distance. La Jolla Cove is a great snorkel or dive spot! Fun fact, a sea lion has external ear flaps and can rotate its back flippers underneath its body to walk or run on land!
There are so many octopus that call La Jolla Shores home! Did you know they have 3 hearts? One pumps blood through the body and the other two pump blood through the gills! This little cutie was taken in the canyon around 60 feet below.
