About September – 2019 Underwater Paparazzi Calendar
Fall is here and that means tons of baby octopus! One of the many reasons I like to cruise the shallow sand dollar beds on the swim back into shore is to see what adorable tiny creatures I can find! I love the contrast of this red octopus with the purple sand dollars! Sand dollars sit up in the sand in a direction least resistant to surge, and in the case of this dive site, it’s a natural navigation tool. They point either to the shore or towards the canyon where we dive! This was taken in La Jolla Shores, in about 20 feet of water.
One of the rare days of beautiful visibility in the shallows where our green turtle residents thrive. The only species of turtles we see locally in San Diego is the green turtle. We find them munching on a healthy diet of algae and the occasional jellyfish in the marine reserve of La Jolla, California.
These types of houndsharks are quite famous in San Diego for their summer congregations. The females are thought to come in shallow in La Jolla when the water is warmer to incubate their young. They are a beautiful shark species that you can see with a simple snorkel, kayak, or stand up paddleboard!
How can you not love these goofballs?! These puppies of the sea are super playful after a few months under the watchful eye of protective parents. And even after these pups are allowed to venture out, mom and dad still like to patrol the area and keep the kids in line.
