About November – 2018 Underwater Paparazzi Calendar
I thought a turtle stuffing it’s face was quite appropriate for a November post. Tis the season of eating! 😀 Green turtles are somewhat of a San Diego celebrity. They can be quite elusive, but with some dedicated time spent in the water, they can definitely grace you with their presence on occasion. Green turtles are primarily herbivores as seen here snacking on some delicious algae. Their name actually comes from their greenish fat which is due to their green diet. I’ve seen these beauties in La Jolla, both scuba diving and freediving/snorkeling so try your luck and see if you spot one of the locals!
You can see hoards of these cuties all over the La Jolla Canyon from the canyon edge to down deep. Here’s a video clip from 100 ft below the surface earlier this year with TONS of these juveniles!
We don’t call these guys “puppies of the sea” for nothing! The juveniles are quite inquisitive and playful, and have been known for tugging on your fins or checking out their reflections in your dome port! That being said, mom and dad are typically not too far away and are very protective of their kids. Marine Protection Act states that you should not be approaching these animals. But sometimes they approach you… be respectful and remember they are still wild animals that can tear flesh apart with their teeth in a second. On that note… look at the cute whiskers! 😀
