Moving down the Pacific coast, these next images are from beautiful Monterey, California!
Who doesn’t love sea stars?! The ochre sea stars are very abundant in Monterey and can measure up to 9 inches long! You can usual fins them in rocky areas clustered together. They can live up to 20 years which may be the longest living sea star on the pacific coast!
When the water has clarity, you can’t help but fill up SD cards with kelpy backgrounds! If you have the opportunity to experience a kelp forest I highly recommend it! The rocky topography and kelp canopies of Breakwater in Monterey were just beautiful!
The sea lion, also known affectionately as the puppies of the sea! Just look deep into those eyes and try not to adore them! These playful pups followed us on our dives, played hide and seek and would pop up and check their reflections out in our dome ports. They are quite the social butterflies and generally hang out in groups. But occasionally we do see see them alone. When they do go underwater, then generally are down for about 10 minutes at a time and have been known to hunt as deep as 800 ft of water!
The fish eating anemone was one of my favorite subjects to shoot underwater while in Monterey. I was fascinated by these underwater flowers and they were beautiful swaying in the surge! I looked for any scenic opportunity to photograph them!
