About May – 2019 Underwater Paparazzi Calendar

This is one of my favorite sea lion photos ever. This cute sea puppy was photographed off Coronado Islands, just a short hour-ish boat ride from San Diego. The pupping season is the best! Curious and playful, these whiskered cuties will swim right up to you, bite your camera cords & strobes, tug on your fins, or just admire their reflection in your camera dome. While they’ll play with you at many depths, the shallows are where they seem to be the most interactive and where they can be not far from mom and dad. We do playfully refer to them as “puppies” but as always, respect the wild animals. They still do have teeth. 😀

California Sea Lion
Sheephead

This is a female sheephead! Taken at about 60 feet below the surface on the oil rigs out of Long Beach, California. The oil rigs are an advanced dive because it’s considered “bottomless” with some of the depths being 800 feet deep. There can also be current and surge. But in return, the rigs can also provide some epic visibility and incredible views. Fun fact, sheephead are all born female and the largest individuals become male due to hormonal changes triggered by social cues. Then they all live in harmony in a very harem like arrangement.

Red Gorgonian & Strawberry Anemones

Sooooo many pretty views on the HMCS Yukon in wreck alley off Mission Bay here in San Diego. This underwater bouquet flourishes on the ships forward guns (which are replicas of the real ones) and is just a small fraction of the life that lives here. This is also an advanced dive site. The ship sits on its side and can be disorienting. The top of the wreck starts at 60 below the surface and 100 ft at the deepest. There are a handful of dive charters that can take you out to these awesome dive sites. Email me for recommendations!

Red Octopus

Octopus are always one of my favorite finds! This one was taken at the canyon of La Jolla Shores around 50-60 feet below. Every way they move is just mesmerizing! You will typically find them more active and hunting at night, although they can be spotted napping in their den during the day!

Prints are also available, email me for details!

You can still get a 2019 Underwater Paparazzi Calendar! Proceeds go to a great cause!  Buy your new calendar here and learn all about the featured photos at the beginning of each month.
