About May – 2018 Underwater Paparazzi Calendar
Of the 53 species of seahorses, San Diego is home to one of the largest seahorses in the world! The Pacific Seahorse! These beauties can be up to 12 inches in length!! Unlike any other species, the male is the one to carry the eggs through to the birth. These creatures are masters of disguise and despite their large size, can be quite difficult to find. During this past El Nino, we had a strange influx of Pacific Seahorses right in La Jolla Shores. Seahorses tend to like calm, weedy areas which made it so strange that they appeared in an area that can have current and swells. But it was such a treat to find these awesome animals on our weekly dives for a bit! Seahorses haven’t been seen at the shores in awhile now, but they still exist in San Diego… IF you can find them 😉
You will find tons of these cute little juvenile calico rockfish darting around the tubes and grasses of the La Jolla Canyon. Like their adult parents, they are not shy for the camera!
I love wreck diving! We are lucky to have a few right in San Diego. The HMCS Yukon is located a few miles off Mission Bay. It’s a Canadian destroyer that is 366 ft long and 40 feet wide. This ship was planned to be sunk specifically to become an artificial reef and was supposed to have quite the sinking party… But other plans were in the cards as this ship sank on its own in the night due to the rocking swells filling the cutouts on the ship. The Yukon came to rest on its port side 100 feet below the surface. While this is definitely a bucket list dive if you’re in San Diego, it is not for the faint of heart. Low visibility, deep depths, current and surge are common on a dive here. Please dive within your limits! But if you have the experience, the structure and life is fantastic and an awesome diver playground!
