About June – 2019 Underwater Paparazzi Calendar
I actually don’t see jellyfish often here in San Diego. Especially in the Marine Room, but this moon jelly was a pleasant surprise last summer! It’s so neat to see them pulsing in the water. The scary thing though is that jellies are a favorite treat with our local turtles, and I’ve pulled quite a few pieces of clear plastic out of the ocean on my swims after doing a double take to make sure it wasn’t a rogue jelly. Makes me worry how often our turtles mistake it too.
I’ve only seen a major squid run here in San Diego once in my diving career. We still get little patches here and there and last summer caught a mini one on a night dive in La Jolla Shores. These are mating squid with an egg pouch!
Did you know that during the day, that beautiful blue bioluminescence is actually a mucky gross red color? That’s actually a major clue for photo nerds like myself to start late night tide chasing looking for that bright blue crash! The red tide algae bloom is filled with phytoplankton called “dinoflagellates.” The organisms glow when there is a disturbance in the water, like a wave crashing!
These roughback sculpins have an awesome dorsal fin! Hard to spot with its camo appearance but I love the crazy light reflections of their eyes when I’m lucky enough to come across one. This was shot in the La Jolla canyons around 65 feet below the surface!
