About July – 2018 Underwater Paparazzi Calendar
The HMCS Yukon wreck is an awesome advanced dive off the coast of San Diego, California. Its a Canadian destroyer that is 366 feet long and sits at about 100 feet deep. The wreck is covered in beautiful anemones and tons of life. I’ve always loved the massive structure of wrecks, I find them hauntingly beautiful. The story of the Yukon began in June of 2000 where a sinking party was planned to celebrate the new artificial reef, however this ship had it’s own plan and sunk without warning the night before. This wreck is an amazing site to see underwater but if you plan to dive it, please have the experience to do so. It’s a deep dive in cold water where temps have been on average in the 50’s. Visibility can be challenging on some days and surge is not uncommon. It also can be disorienting since the ship rest on its side. But regardless, the ship’s sheer mass and beauty is reason enough to have it on your dive bucket list!
The adult Horn Shark is one of my favorite finds on a night dive! While its not uncommon to see them during the day, I seem to only find the larger active adults at night. It belongs to the bullhead shark family. Its name comes from its short, blunt head with high ridges above the eyes. There are small dark spots on it’s brownish gray skin with large spines on its two dorsal fins. The maximum length of this species is about 3.5 feet.
This is a Tritonia festiva nudibranch was found on a gorgonian in the depths of Scripps Canyon. They are commonly found from the coast of Alaska to northern Baja. I love the stark white against the red branch!
