The fall and winter is an epic time to visit the Coronado Islands. It’s pupping season! A magical few months where the sea lion pups are just old enough to be curious and want to play with you, but not too old where they can be snotty jerks. Kind of like that teenager vibe! 😀 These babes are fascinated by our scuba fins, strobes, and their reflection in our camera dome ports. It’s such a fun time to visit the islands! This typically ends up to be a shallow dive. The pups like to play on the surface with you and while you can go deeper, the sea lion fun stays above 20 feet.
Octopus are always one of my favorite encounters! Watching them effortlessly and gracefully glide along the sea floor is simply mesmerizing. You can regularly see octopus in the La Jolla Canyons but its harder to catch them on the move like this. This was shot around 65 feet below the surface.
The leopard shark is a local celebrity! In the summer months they come in fairly shallow to incubate their young in warmer water. It’s pretty thrilling to be able to see these beauties in just a few feet of water. But not to worry, they aren’t dangerous. They are bottom feeders and definitely more scared of you. But still respect their space. They are still wild animals.
This stunner of a sea slug is the Spanish shawl nudibranch. Bright, vibrant and a a total show off, they are really fun to photograph. This one was photographed in the La Jolla Shores canyon at 60 feet below the surface. Have you ever seen one swim? Looks like its dancing! Check out the video from my Instagram below:
