Thank you for supporting the new Underwater Paparazzi calendar! Proceeds this year will once again be going to Afrioceans. You can read more about their vision by clicking here. If you haven’t gotten your calendar yet, you can still order one here!
This years calendar is all about the wild Pacific coast! From Vancouver Island, all the way to Baja California, Mexico! It’s a look into the cold water paradise that is one of my favorite playgrounds! I hope you enjoy it!
I was blown away by the cold water diving of British Columbia! Particularly the area of God’s Pocket off northern Vancouver Island! It started my love of the PNW and I can’t wait to go back! This colder, nutrient dense water held so much life! And by cold, I mean 45 degree water! The coldest water I’ve been in! A drysuit definitely made it easier to do multiple dives in a day! The anemones were huge and healthy. I saw this one at the end of one of my dives. I was already pushing my luck on the hour they allocated us to be in the water per dive, but I saw this scene while bobbing in the water waiting to get back on the boat… I flashed a grin at the DM and yelled “be right back” and dropped back down to get a few shots of the sun ray lit scene! Figured it was worth getting in trouble for… haha #sorrynotsorry
These metridiums, or white plumed anemones were HUGE and the were everywhere! I mean fields and fields of them, they were unreal! They can reach up to 3 feet tall and thrive in cold water environments. We actually have them in San Diego too, which is the southernmost point they can be found, but never have I seen such huge mitridiums or wide dense fields of them! They are beautiful!
Red Irish Lords! They were kind of the super stars of the trip with those gorgeous colors… annnnd because they made excellent models! These sculpins have the ability to change colors to match their surroundings and chill out waiting for prey to come by. Since they like to stay so still they were awesome to practice fish portraits on!
This huge gorgeous pair of fish eating anemones were posted up perfectly on a rock. They feed on fish and crustaceans and are found from Alaska through California!
