About February – 2018 Underwater Paparazzi Calendar
This image was shot in La Jolla, California at the Marine Room. The Marine Room has a rocky reef full of life to be explored. You can find amazing things here in just a few feet of water down to 100 feet deep further out in the canyon. We have a few resident green turtles that can be seen (if you’re lucky!) either scuba diving or freediving! While visibility can be challenging most days, if you catch a cooperative swell, you could be in for an amazing treat! The Marine Room is a protected reserve where you may encounter many types of schools of fish, lobster, leopard sharks, tope sharks, horn sharks, harbor seals, sea lions, giant sea bass, rays, and you guessed it, green sea turtles! Greens are among the largest sea turtles in the world! While they can be up to 700 pounds and 5 feet long, our green local celebrities tend to be on the smaller side around 1-3 feet long. These turtles can also live to be 100 years old!
People think I’m joking when I tell them this cute creature is called a sarcastic fringehead. But don’t let their cartoonish charm fool you! They are extremely temperamental and territorial and if you are ever lucky enough to witness a battle, their mouths flare open in a way that looks like something straight out of Alien. 😀 I came across this feisty guy in a crevice in the La Jolla Shores Canyon.
If only slugs were this pretty on land! This beauty is commonly called a Spanish Shawl. Vibrant colors make for a fun photography find! This particular nudibranch and swim in the water column by flexing its body back and forth! This was also shot in the canyon of La Jolla shores.
