Dive Report 8.3.12 – Giant Sea Bass Were Babies Once Too…

August 6, 2012 by underwaterpaparazzi 1 Comment

La Jolla Shores, California

First Friday of the month, you know what that means! SD Hammerhead dive meetup! Met up with 10 other divers Friday night at what appeared to be a lake. Armed with our cameras, Fred and I teamed up for a declared paparazzi dive. Pretty easy to spot the two slow divers lit up by strobes all night! It was a calm kick out, We dropped down and viz went past my line of vision with my dive light. So awesome. 😀 We missed the wall, but instead of backing up a smidge to find it, we got distracted by the TONS of tiny life out. Especially the Octopus, my favorite!!! It was a macro kind of night, and we had a field day with it. Temps were a chilly 51 degrees when we were at depth of 77 feet, but it shot up to 61 degrees once you are above 28 feet. We basically defrosted on the swim in. 😀 The highlight of the night was a tiny fish darting around quickly in the shallows. Never saw anything like it before. No bigger than 1 inch, with darker fins. It was really hard to get a sharp photo with how fast it was moving, but Herb was able to make it out to be a juvenile Giant Sea Bass! Great night dive! Which of course we topped off with some hot chocolate, made to order! 😀

Max Depth: 77 feet
Temp:  51 degrees
Viz – 20+ feet
Current: light
Surge: none
Bottom Time: 62 min
