The Marine Room, La Jolla, California
Headed out for an evening dive with Kimo, Aaron and Debra. We wanted to do the shallows by the caves to look for soupfins but the surface was just too choppy for any decent viz in the shallows. You know what that means!! Deep at the Canyon!! Viz was decent, about 15 feet of viz, and temps were still nice too. Usual suspects out about about. A really nice dive!! The challenge of this dive was the exit. The waves were up to the Marine Room Restaurant wall, which normally isn’t a big deal, it’s just fun to freak out the dining guests of the restaurant since the topside conditions always LOOK a lot worse than they actually are. The waves were rolling in pretty heavy and consistent and even next to the wall we were knee deep in the water. To a diver, still no big deal…. however the shallows were blanketed with sting rays. I have never shuffled so much in my life!! And I was trying to stay behind Aaron, since he was kind enough to “pave the way”, but I could still feel them scurrying over my feet. I was thinking “Please don’t sting me, please don’t sting me…” over and over. I’m pretty sure a leopard shark head butted me too…. 😀 After tripping in a big hole by the steps we finally made it sting free!
