The Marine Room, La Jolla, California
Evening dive with Kimo started out relaxing and chit chatting about the BEST WEEK OF THE YEAR on the swim out. AKA: Shark Week!!! Topside conditions were just beautiful. Our plan was to go deep at the Marine Room. Unfortunately it was a little too early still for the night life to be out. Typically, I LOVE the deep canyon of the Marine at night. Still saw a handful of the usual suspects out. Highlight… er most noteable part of the dive came at the end in the shallows. I knew it was still light outside. So I knew something was off when I see we are approaching a huge dark mass. My first thought was that some crazy current picked us up and we were looking at the La Jolla Cliffs. CRAP. But no…. that wasn’t it. My heart starting beating a little bit faster as the darkness took over. It was so BIZARRE. Then I got distracted temporarily by a fried egg jelly. (ooo something shiny! haha) Kimo pressed on so I followed through the darkness. No joke, I was hiding behind him like a little kid. 😀 He was at a stand still filming, so I crept closer, squinting at what the heck he was videoing. Then I realized finally. We were in a massive black out bait ball. With the bad viz in the shallows it was mostly a shadow and “how cool” is what I would typically think. Unless just 45 min prior you were discussing shark week in depth…. 😀 And what eats bait fish like that? Seals and Sea Lions. We did see two come barreling through the bait briefly. And what eats seals and sea lions as discussed in depth on shark week? 😀 One and only time I was a big fat baby in the water. 😀 Note to self, do not talk about shark week on the swim out on a dive. 😀 Kimo’s video is below where you get glimpses of the fish swarm.
