Dive Report 7.2.12 – Shark Butt

July 3, 2012 by underwaterpaparazzi 5 Comments

La Jolla Cove, California

I thought it would be pretty epic to break my shark repellent curse at the cove this evening given today’s events (click here)... What did I get? Shark ass. Yup. That’s it. The butt of a soupfin. The cove is such a tease. Ryan and I did our trek out to the buoy to drop. Topside was nice, and there was barely any surge. Viz was still nice. It had weird pockets though. Sometimes the viz was 25 feet and blueish, sometimes it was more like 10 feet and greenish. Given the lack of divers out, it was a bit eerie. There was two divers that just got out when we arrived around 6:15, and then we saw only 3 divers gearing up after our massive stair climb. Parking was even a breeze. So weird. The dive was very peaceful though. We had a regular entourage of calico bass, sheepshead, and blacksmith fish. At one point we were swarmed by sardines. We both just sank to the sand on our knees and just watched. We also saw a school of barracuda and a few bat ray fly bys. If the Cove and I keep getting along, I could definitely get used to this. 🙂

Max Depth: 51 feet
Temp:  58 degrees
Viz – 10-25 feet
Current: mild on the outskirts of the cove
Surge: none really
Bottom Time:  68 min

Eye Candy: sheepshead, blacksmith fish, calico bass, perch, sardines, barracudas, sheep crab, spiny lobster, garibaldi, and two banded guitar fish

I have a similar issue: I run a website for logging Sevengill shark sightings, but as soon as I get in the water at the Cove, they all flee. People see them the day *before* I do my dive and the day *after*…but, on my dive, nada, zip, zilch. We share the same curse.

Time to really be on guard I guess since the Great Whites are back close to shore. Scary!
