La Jolla Shores, California – SD Hammerheads Dive Meetup
Ahhhh Friday the 13th…. Nothing unlucky about this day as far as I’m concerned! Had easy topside conditions and small waves. Kimo, Sam, Jacob and I head out to dive the wall. Viz wasn’t as great as previous days but still a good 10 feet. Within minutes of swimming along the wall, we come across one of the very large resident halibuts! Behind it a shovel nose guitar fish that had been…. well munched on. So maybe Friday the 13th wasn’t so lucky for him… 🙁 We continued down to find a good sized banded guitar fish swimming along, a baby red octopus, a horn shark, sheeps crab… eye candy the entire dive! But the highlight of the dive happened in only 6 feet of water. Sam and I were swimming slowly towards the shore in the shallows (we just weren’t ready to get out of the water!) getting a kick out of the swarms of guitar fish swimming around, when we came face to face with a soupfin shark! We obviously startled each other and the shark bolted. But Sam said he got smacked in the face with its tail with his quick exit! We both popped up wide eyed and excited! Very cool experience! Oh did I mention this was Sam’s first night dive? Talk about a hard dive to top!! And we have yet another diver who has fallen in love night diving!!!

So Friday the 13th turned out to be a Lucky day for you and Sam. Was that the kind of shark you had been hoping to see all along? Keep diving!

The shark I want to see is the seven gill shark. But the soupfin shark is still a treat!!
