Point Loma Kelp Beds, 2 tank dive on Waterhorse Charters with House of Scuba
Dive #1 – It was a beautiful day to be on the water in San Diego! Morning started out overcast when we left the dock, but the clouds burned off giving us a lovely sunshiny day! Swells on the water were 1-2 footers, not bad at all, but I religiously take my sea sick meds “just in case”. I’ve been seasick once which happened the day I used the phrase “I never get seasick” out loud. Um yes. That is just ASKING to be seasick! 😀 That was the worst feeling ever and vowed that would never happen again. Our awesome crew, Anita and Greg took great care of us as usual. I love being pampered on the boats. We head to the first dive spot in the kelp, and I drop down with Lisa, Ryan, and Brian. I like following kelp stalks down, you never know when you are going to come eye to eye with… kelp crabs, kelp fish, senoritas, or who know what else. It seemed a bit murky on the top but cleared up as we got to depth. 15 to sometimes 25 feet hazy viz. The bottom is nice and rocky and the rock ledge we picked to start on was nudibranch central. TONS of Spanish Shawls and Hermissendas Crassicornis’. Rock fish popping in and out of holes. I happily, and slowly checked out every square inch of that pile snapping pictures of everything. There is just so much tiny life to see! I also found and picked up an old fishing lure and manged to bring it back with me without stabbing myself with it. 😀 A certain someone made fun of us that we really didn’t move farther than 20 feet from the anchor line. hehe. That’s your disadvantage for diving with the paparazzi!
Dive #2 – This dive also had a beautiful rocky bottom with tons of ledges to peek under. Surge was bit more noticeable this time. But still a nice but hazy 15-20 foot viz. This dive site we also seemed to have an entourage of fish. As usual, my fins were up in the air with my head down in the rocks some where looking for the tiny stuff, when Lisa started tugging at my fin. I turn around and the there is a yellow rock fish hovering just starring at us eye to eye. I tried my very hardest not to burst out laughing. She told me later he had been there for awhile and she knew it was a great photo op if she could get me out of the rocks, haha. Now that’s an awesome dive buddy!! These kelp stalks were swarming with perch, rockfish, and garibaldi’s. Anita said this area is very common for the seven gill sharks and the Giant Black Sea Bass. We didn’t see any. Shocker, I know, the shark repellent, aka ME, was in the water. *sigh* Still a relaxing day with beautiful dives under the sea!
