La Jolla Cove…oh wait just kidding the Marine Room… No really the Cove……
Who’s bright idea was it to be at the Cove at 6AM!!!! Oh wait, it might of been mine. Oops. Got my butt out of my nice warm bed this morning to meet up with Erin, Jovan, Ryan, Tim, and Anna to hopefully catch a glimpse of the Seven Gills and have a nice early morning dive before work. Checked out the cove it was nice and flat, looked very promising. We all gear up, head to the stairs to find what was a flat cove just 20 minutes prior, now had some lovely steady sets rolling in. Where did that come from?! *sigh* I’m cove cursed. Knowing that those steady sets were killing our visibility and creating more surge than we cared to deal with, we called it. We pack it up and those of us that could, head over to the Marine Room instead. Waves were rolling in pretty steady here too but nothing we couldn’t manage. Maybe 3-4 footers. Just annoying if anything. Difference between the waves here and the cove is what we wanted to see was well past the swell. Just had to get a cold water wave facial a few times, no problem. We drop down in about 22 feet of water and the viz was a nice 15-20 feet. We took our heading to what we thought was the canyon wall and kept swimming….., it’s gotta be close….swimming, viz is good, where is that dark shadow of a canyon wall…..swimming. I’m looking at my computer and this is the first time I’ve seen sand dollar beds at 50 feet. Something isn’t right. We surface and Ryan bursts out laughing. We are on outside border of the Cove near the buoy. I mean REALLY?!!! Guess we were supposed to dive the cove today after all! Time to turn around and start a really LONG swim back in. We drop back down and start our swim in and then all the sudden we run into……GENGHIS KHAN!!!! Totally made the swim worth it. I’ve been wanting to see this statue for quite some time!! He’s definitely got quite a bit more growth on him since the last dive bums photos I’ve seen surface on him! After a decent swim in we surface and finish it off with a surface swim. There is a decent current today so we swam parallel with the shore then cruised right in on the waves. I joke about trying to get up early to exercise, but holy cow this was not what I had in mind! Not many pics this morning, I’ll try to make up for it this evening. Yes that’s right. I got skunked on my dive today so my do-over is tonight at the Shores. Check back soon for the dive update! Oh and the 50/50 dive you ask? Because we visited both the Cove and the Marine Room today. Max depth was 50 feet, bottom temp 50 degrees and bottom time was 50 minutes. 😀
Max Depth: 50 feet
Temp: 50 degrees
Viz – 15-20 feet
Current: mild-strong, needed to swim parallel a bit to get out of it
Surge: light
Bottom Time: 50 min
Eye Candy:
Salps, swimming crabs, graceful crabs, sand dollars, sheeps crab, blacksmith fish, and Genghis Khan!
