La Jolla Shores, California – Hammerhead Dive Meetup
Met up with Fred, Tim, Jeff, and Kimo Friday night…. a BRISK Friday night. Where we were chilly gearing up, let alone how we were going to feel after we got out of the water. Waves were 1-2 footers, really easy swim out. In the distance someone was lighting off those candle lanterns into the clear night sky. Really pretty to watch… There was a bit of bio luminescence out and about 10-15 ft of viz. The best part of the viz being down at 100 ft deep. Regardless of the water temp being 53 degrees. Buuuuuuurrrr. Fred found the squid! I’m not talking the 2 or 3 we’ve been seeing here and there, but a huge group of them. Still not the masses we saw last year but they are so cool to watch! Tons of life out, other highlight being a large angel shark completely out in the open and we noticed we are starting to see the sand dollar beds coming back! Also saw a small fluttering on the way back in around 60 feet. I thought it might be a baby giant sea bass with how it was fluttering around but it looked to be a small clam? Cruising through the water right in front of me and then clamped down on a piece of grass. Kinda weird. Although Tim thought I was the weird one concentrating on holding a piece of grass and taking photos of it. Had to tell him later it was a clam thing and I was not narc’d out. 😀 (I have been corrected since this post and have been told it’s actually a baby scallop, and they do cruise around the water column till they get big enough to settle down in a spot! Cooooool.)
First dive of the new year was a success and a beautiful one at that. I don’t know if its just colder this year, or part of my brain knows I finally ordered that drysuit I’ve been wishing for and it is reminding the rest of shaking body it was darn good investment. 😀 Only a few more weeks till it comes in! Us brave wetsuit divers have never geared down so fast that I can remember. Thank goodness for after dive hot chocolate. Yes, you are all welcome. 😀
