La Jolla Shores, California – La Jolla Canyon
Dive # – 414
I’m back in the water and I can’t even fully express how ecstatic I am! For those who didn’t know, I had an unfortunate little accident while camping about 7 weeks ago and sprained my ankle REALLY well. That extra cement step came out of nowhere!! I had a cankle the size of a grapefruit for WEEKS…… I never said I was graceful above the surface. 😀
This morning I joined my buddy Victor for a dawn dive. I love that feeling of serenity that comes with the sight of the ocean in the early morning light, and the smell of the sea air. That pre-dive anticipation that you know its going to be a good day when its starts out below the surface. I really missed that!! It was beautiful out. Calm and the ocean had a pretty blue hue. We dropped in easily 25-30 feet of viz at the canyon slope. Came across a halibut that let me get in his face among the sand dollars. The rest of the dive down to 85 feet was full of lizardfish, sarcastic fringeheads, rockfish, and the usual critters. we spent our time slowly cruising south to the walls looking for the little stuff and found plenty. We were also visited by a diving cormorant. Bottom temp registered at 60 degrees…. Never seen that before! But the shores never ceases to surprise me. Slow swim back in poking along the sand dollars for a very satisfying 57 minute dive! We accidentally popped up in a hurdle of surfers…. not that it mattered since they would probably be waiting quite some time for a wave. 😀 Its great to be back in the water!
