Next up is Baja California, Mexico!
This was taken during our liveaboard adventure up the pacific coast of Baja where the terrain started looking a lot like home. Rocky sea floors, kelp forests, and some very familiar fish faces. This is where the water temps started to drop as well!
If I didn’t know better, I would have thought it was clear day in Point Loma, but instead, these blacksmith fish and kelp stalks made their home south of the border!
See that weird circle-ish patch of purple algae? Those are garibaldi eggs!! And that’s a a very territorial parent looking after the kiddos. These bright orange damselfish can be found as far north as Monterey, and as far south as Baja! Fun fact, the male makes the nest to attract a female to come and deposit the eggs. Then its the male’s responsibility to ward off any predators… even divers!
The hermissenda opalescens is a nudibranch fav and quite commonly found from Northern California to Sea of Cortez, Mexico. How can you not love those vibrant colors? They love to hang out on in a good rocky area and kelp forest! These sea slugs feed primarily on hydroids, but may also eat sea anemones, bryzoans, sea pens, corals, sponges, and even each other!
