Cozumel, Mexico – Cathedral, Paso del Cedral (shallows), Santa Rosa (swim through), Santa Rosa (night)
Dive # – 511-514
We had a veteran Cozumel diver on our boat. He used to be a divemaster here for a few years, but now is just vacationing. He also recognized we were the cool kids and wanted to be on our boat. 😀 And I’m glad he was! A few of us were chatting with him about his dive experiences here and I had to ask the obvious questions of what his fav dive spots were. And because of this simple conversation we were introduced to Cathedral and Devil’s Throat which are apart of Punta Sur. Since these are both deep dives they were spread over two days. Today, those of us that were comfortable, conquered Cathedral.
Cathedral has large swim throughs at 110 feet. Before we actually got into the caverns though, Bethy, Mike and I found a friendly turtle who immediately became Bethy’s new BFF:
Cathedral was gorgeous. We had fantastic conditions for it. There can be strong currents through here, but we had it easy. If you are comfortable and experienced enough for the possibilities of strong current on a deep dive with deep swim through caverns, definitely request this one. You need to be good on air and like always, really good on buoyancy. It’s not fun getting silted out ever, let alone in a cavern at 100+ feet deep. When I recommend this dive, I can’t stress enough that dive titles mean nothing, and experience means everything. Its really a safety issue. I know there are many divers with the title of “advanced” or “rescue diver” but don’t dive enough to back up those titles. And of course on the flip side there are advanced certified divers that have an insane amount of experience. Its just a friendly reminder, please dive within your limits, not your ego. 🙂
Paso del Cedral – This time we explored the shallows of Paso del Cedral. Turtles, sharks, barracuda, schools of fish, swim throughs… Sensory overload!
Santa Rosa – Swim throughs – This is one of Cozumel’s signature dives. Love the swim throughs and ledges here! Dropped down on a nurse shark napping. Clearly it wasn’t interested in sticking around and posing for me. 😀
Santa Rosa Night Dive – I FREAKING LOVE NIGHT DIVES. Although I think most people know that by now. 😀 This one was pretty epic. It started out at twilight and we descended down with the sun. Our divemasters, Jorge and Paulino are the masters of finding all things amazing. They were finding lionfish for Mike & Nick and as well as huge turtles, lobsters, crabs, drum fish, splendid toadfish, and octopus galore. And the icing on the cake for this dive was getting a glimpse of the Cozumel splendid toadfish OUT of its hole!! Just an awesome dive! I surfaced from the dive exploding with excitement and eager to hear about what my dive buddies saw, only to find out I surfaced at the wrong boat. Whoops. 🙂
