Moving down the Pacific coast, these next images are near and dear to my heart because they from my home town coast in San Diego, California!
Summertime in San Diego means Leopard Sharks! The females come in shallow to give birth to their young and can be seen by simply snorkeling in La Jolla, California. Females can produce from seven to 36 offspring, which measure 20 centimeters at birth! If you catch the right day, you might even catch a glimpse of some the babies swimming around, getting used to their new home and foraging for food. Check out this video on my Instagram:
While these are not dangerous to humans, it’s still important to remember these are wild animals and you should not try to to touch them in any way. As locals, we look forward to seeing these local celebrities every year. Never gets old!
These muppet looking fish are called sarcastic fringeheads. While they can look cartoonish and goofy in their holes, they turn into a character from Alien if you get too close to their eggs. The mouth can flare open to 3 times its size to show dominance and fend off intruders. It’s quite a show if you’re lucky enough to witness it! Another fun fact, the males take care of the eggs! Taken in the canyon of La Jolla Shores, California, approximately 60 feet below the surface.
Anemones can be easy to overlook, but they are so beautiful! This is an extreme closeup of these beauties show the tiny detail that can be easily taken for granted. Taken in the canyon of La Jolla Shores, California, approximately 60 feet below the surface.
Cusk eels are normally seen at night. The second they see you, they start burrowing their butts in the sand. I’ve found these cuties as shallow as 20 feet to down in the canyon around 60-70 feet. Taken in the canyon of La Jolla Shores, California.
