About August – 2019 Underwater Paparazzi Calendar
The elusive green turtles of San Diego! We are lucky to have these in our ocean backyard! While they don’t always like to grace us with their presence, it’s such a treat when they do emerge. Green turtles are not named for the colors on their shell that are on the outside, but rather for the green layer of fat underneath their carapace! In fact, some green turtles have a darker almost black color shell. I’ve been told that the ones that we see locally are young turtles who come to basically stuff their face till they are old enough to reproduce. Would love to hear more, if you know anything more about our locals, message me! This was taken while snorkeling and freediving in San Diego with ambient light. Pro tip: Please don’t chase the turtles, if you are calm and give it room to breathe, they typically let you hang out for awhile if you respect their space. Plus chasing them only ends up with turtle butt photos and who wants that? 😀 This image won a 4th place ribbon at the 2018 San Diego County Fair!
The stark contrast of garibaldi’s next to, well, anything really, makes for pretty cool compositions! Kelp forests are near and dear to my heart and I love the challenge of photographing them with such a bright foreground subject! This was taken at San Clemente Island in the Channel Islands!
Rarely do harbor seals take any interest in me. In fact they typically swim by just far enough away so the photo will be too hazy to publish if I even attempt one. I’ve become very accustomed to that over the shoulder harbor seal smirk, and I’m positive its because it KNOWS its toying with my emotions. BUT every once in a long while, I’ll get lucky and have a curious baby harbor seal decide I’m worth coming over to investigate. And it’s always worth every seal snub Ive gotten in the past! Taken in La Jolla with ambient light.
I love looking for giant kelpfish! They are gorgeous in color, whether it be red like this one, to shades of yellow or green. Master of disguise, if you don’t look close enough you’ll mistake it for a blade of kelp. Taken at San Clemente Island.
